Point of View: What Is Life Without Mel Brooks?

In an earlier post, Friday Fun: I Want Sandwiches, I Want Chicken, when commenting on the super-nova of energy that is Mel Brooks, Samantha Swan wrote “Would that we could bottle Mel.”

There are people I couldn’t imagine the world without, and yet here we are. Kurt Vonnegut, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Wilder, Walther Matthau, Jack Lemmon are all gone to wherever, and yet the earth keeps spinning. It seems impossible to me, but it’s true.

A Force of Nature, Mel at 86, is decidedly still with us…

One such force of nature, a seemingly inexhaustible well of joy, chutzpah, and shameless comedy, is Mel Brooks. And Mel, at 86, is decidedly still with us. I’m telling you right now, if this guy ever dies, I’m going to have a spectacular nervous breakdown, and to preserve an element of existence that I consider to be as essential as oxygen, I am going to assume his identity until I, too, shuffle off this mortal coil.

So it is with great glee that I direct you to this recent interview with Mr Brooks, who, at 86, is more on the ball, spellbinding and hilarious than ever.

This is Mel interviewed by Marc Maron on his great WTF podcast, and it’s pretty wonderful to listen to a comic interview another comic.
Bask in two hours of his amazingly detailed memories about his classic comedies, his relationships with Carl Reiner, Sid Caesar, Richard Pryor, David Lynch, his mother, and the Nazis.

Just listening to him kicks death in the ass.
