Indie Inspiration: Paula Pell on Here’s The Thing

If you’re already a comedy lover, you probably know Paula Pell. But if you need an introduction, Pell started as a writer for Saturday Night Live in 1995 and stayed for 17 years. Although no longer with the show full-time, she still returns for the odd episode, most notably recently on the Louis C.K. episode, in which she wrote the great and dirty ‘last call’ sketch for C.K. and Kate McKinnon.

Her first episode of the show featured Mariel Hemingway and Blues Traveler, and in the years since she has been nominated for 7 Emmys and won once. She has also been nominated for and won WGA awards for her work on SNL. In 2001, she was one of only three women writers on the show, alongside Tina Fey and Melanie Graham.

Pell’s producing credits include “30 Rock“, on which she also played Paula Hornberger, and she appeared in “Parks and Recreation” as Ron Swanson’s mother. She is also a producer on Judd Apatow’s “This Is 40“.

Being a much loved host of SNL himself, Alec Baldwin is no stranger to Pell and her humor, and their familiarity is evident in this lovely interview. They are definitely two people who like to laugh, and their laughter in this case brings a kind of intimacy to their conversation and invites us right in. A great way to warm your January and get your creative muscles a bit more limber…

Paula Pell. Funny as hell.
