Friday Fun: Gene Wilder’s Greatest Love Scene

If you are a Woody Allen or a Gene Wilder fan, then chances are you’ve seen ‘Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask‘.

Gene Wilder; oh those eyes.

If you haven’t, then you need to know about Wilder’s scene in bed with a sheep in this movie.

I share it here because of the beauty of Wilder’s interaction with the animal. It is truly hilarious, and he plays it so straight. Anyone I’ve ever met that’s seen this film, if they don’t bring it up immediately themselves, loses it in laughter at the mention of this scene.

It’s his eyes as he looks at her, and talks to her…

But my real reason for sharing it, what makes it extra special, is an interview I saw once with Gene Wilder in which this scene was mentioned. He was asked, in essence, why was it so funny, and what did he do to be prepared, or how did he prepare to be, so funny in this scene.

I’m paraphrasing here, but what Mr. Wilder essentially answered was this:

“I just… loved the sheep. I looked into its eyes, and really loved it.”

The ‘truth’ was he loved the sheep. And truth in comedy is funny. That’s playing as “straight” as you can get.
