I was at Second City performing live, 5 to 7 days a week for 3 years. It was not possible to be there and not know who Lorne Michaels is. I would also argue, if you’re a fan of comedy, it’s impossible to not know who Michaels is. If you watch US Network TV – especially NBC, it’s especially hard to not know who Lorne Michaels is.
He has put more new comedy talent on the air and in movies than can be measured – and who and how the hell would measure in the first place? But we wouldn’t know who John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Chris Rock, Tina Fey and Kiristen Wiig were without him. And the list goes on… Michaels himself says he works with:
“people at the point of their career where nothing matters but the work… people just completely devote themselves to the show.”
“Here’s The Thing” is a very good podcast hosted by Alec Baldwin, who has hosted “Saturday Night Live“, feeling to us more like an honorary cast member than host, no less than 16 times. This makes him uniquely qualified to interview Michaels, and it’s a pleasure to listen to them.
Why have I put him here under Indie Inspiration for independent filmmakers?
Because Michaels always went his own way. Especially in the beginning, when no one had a frame of reference or could picture what he wanted to do in sketch comedy.
Because today, he is an independent producer of comedy films. And because,
Lorne Michaels is a rare producer by being truly involved in all aspects of production, yet he himself says when he does his job right, he leaves no fingerprints.
That seems to me to be something we should all be doing as creative producers.
This week’s Indie Inspiration: Lorne Michaels on “Here’s The Thing”.
