What do Ricky Gervais, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Louis C.K. have in common?
They are all stand up comedians of course. They have also each worked together in various pairings. C.K. used to write for Rock on ‘The Chris Rock Show‘. Gervais and C.K. have done a film together and Gervais has appeared on C.K.’s show. Seinfeld and Gervais did Seinfeld’s ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee‘ and ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm‘ together. C.K. used to open for Seinfeld back in the day on tour, and in fact, Seinfeld, Rock and C.K. know each other from the clubs. C.K. wrote on Conan O’Brien and Saturday Night Live as well.
They are all stand-ups, and they have that in common, which on one level, makes them the same.
But if you are familiar with their work, of course you know, their personal styles are all very different.
Gervais put them together as a panel for HBO’s ‘Talking Funny‘, so that they could sit, uninterrupted, without an audience or an interviewer, just four comics talking together about how and why they do what they do.
This is nirvana for a comedy nerd like me, and in terms of my own work with Ardent, we see enormous value in the on-going discussion of the process and project post-mortem.
By rights I could’ve written a PoV post about this or an Indie Inspiration piece for it. In the end, I decided on Friday Fun, because even though they’re legitimately discussing their work, watching them do it is pure pleasure.
So whether you tune in for the first minute, the first 5, or watch for the duration, it’s a fabulous discussion of comedic approach and structure — and just, y’know. What makes you laugh.
For your Friday Fun viewing pleasure: HBO’s ‘Talking Funny’.
Have a great weekend everybody!
