Friday Fun: I Want Sandwiches, I Want Chicken

Two weeks ago Ardent partner Samantha Swan shared her love of Jerry Seinfeld’s web series Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. Episode: ‘Mad Man in a Death Machine’. Here she returns with episode ‘I Want Sandwiches, I Want Chicken’.

How we love Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. And what could be better than having that coffee with Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner? Their episode, titled ‘I Want Sandwiches, I Want Chicken’ is a delight from start to finish.

Seinfeld’s coffee of the day starts with Carl Reiner who describes his evening routine; his good friend of 62 years Mel Brooks comes over every night for dinner while they watch Jeopardy.
When Seinfeld asks if they take turns hosting Reiner says, no Brooks always goes to him. Why? “He’s an excellent driver. Mel’s younger than me by five years.” That means Brooks is only 85.

There’s a wonderful symmetry to watching Seinfeld with Reiner and Brooks. Not only are they his childhood heroes – listen for the story Seinfeld tells about seeing Reiner when he was only eight years old – but the first four episodes of his sit-com ‘Seinfeld’ were shot on the same soundstage that Carl Reiner shot ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’ on 30 years earlier.

There’s real sweetness here, both in watching the way Seinfeld relates to the great comics, and also in the way these two comedy legends relate to each other. Deli and beer – or is it cream soda? – it feels like dinner with your favorite uncles. And as for Mel “only” being 85: fortified with the magic elixir that is good deli food from Beverly Hills institution Nate ‘n’ Al’s, Mel Brooks’ energy is astounding. At one point he demonstrates acting out an old joke and I’m not exaggerating when I assure you, he is a white-hot super-nova of energy, still fluid and light on his feet. Would that we could bottle Mel.

62 years of friendship, deli and dinner every night? We should all live so long, and be so lucky.
Pour a cup of joe and enjoy, everybody.
