Friday Fun: Rob Delaney’s Oaken F***weapon May Just Be His Brain

Friday posts are for fun, but we’ll always post about subjects in which we’re genuinely interested. Lately social networking and writing online has been much discussed around here, and I’ve become rather appreciative of Twitter.

If you’re a ‘Webby’ type even remotely familiar with social networking, then you’ve heard that Rob Delaney was recently voted the funniest person on Twitter. And if that sounds like more of the same cringe-inducing reality TV type manufacturing of celebrity, it isn’t. Delaney was a stand-up comic first and uses the scalpel of a surgeon when it comes to crafting jokes in 140 characters.

The first day I followed him was almost my last; I snorfed up my coffee no less than three times as I read. Since then I’ve learned to forego liquids while reading him.

As of this writing he has 604.7k followers and by the time you read this he’ll probably have more.

He joined the site in 2009 when he realized it was a wonderful way to deliver a joke and has used it as a way to challenge himself – at first as a way of getting to a punchline in 140 characters, but as time went on and he met that challenge, he began to ask himself if he could have two twists within those limits, or even multiple points of view.

He can, and though he often tweets political humour, personally I think he is a master of filth.

Whoopi Goldberg once referred to Redd Foxx as “Dirty. But really good dirty.” In the early 70s Foxx released a comedy album that showed him on the cover recoiling from a donkey. It was called “You Gotta Wash Your Ass”. I like to think that Delaney is a contemporary version of that kind of deliciously dirty. The medium might be new, but at the end of the day, he’s old fashioned like all really good comics, which is why I love them: they just want to make you laugh.
Oh, and you will. Out loud. I did.
